Meb Keflezghi Takes 4th place, Yared Asmerom 19th Place – Men's Marathon London Olympics 2012:
Stephen Kiprotich of Uganda wins marathon
LONDON (USA Today) – Stephen Kiprotich of Uganda grabbed the lead in the last third of the race and then and pulled away to win the Olympic marathon in a surprise on Sunday.
Kiprotich, 23, finished in 2 hours, 8 minutes, 1 second for his first Olympic gold medal.
Abel Kirui if Kenya was second in 2:08:27, and Wilson Kipsang Kiprotich of Kenya was third in 2:09.37. The Kenyans competed in memory of the late Sammy Wanjiru. Four years ago in Beijing, Wanjiru captured the country's first Olympic marathon gold. He died last year after a fall from a balcony during a domestic dispute.
Kiprotich grabbed a flag from a specator along the route and raised it above his head in the final strides of his victory.
Meb Keflezighi of the USA rallied late to finish fourth in 2:11:06.
"Fourth is not the place wanted to finish," Keflezighi said. "But fourth in the world, I'll take it. I'm very proud of myself."
The 26.2-mile marathon course was a virtual tour of London's high-profile sites, including Big Ben, Pariliament, the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace.
The USA's Ryan Hall dropped out of the race at about the 11-mile mark because of tightness in his hamstring.
