History of Cycling Tour of Eritrea (Giro dell'Eritrea) – The first race was held in 1946 and was promoted by the Italian community of Eritrea with the Italian name Primo Giro dell'Eritrea.
In 2001 after a fifty year long hiatus, the Tour was resurrected as celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Eritrean independence. It was won by Habte Weldesimon, who repeated his victory in 2003 and 2004. Watch video for full coverage..

It's good Eritrean women are embracing cycling as much as men do. If Eritrean sports commission adds wrestling, boxing as well as track and field to the national sport programmes, I am sure they will be able to produce fine all round athletic citizens. Eritreans one clear advantage over other African nations' youth, they are by far the most disciplined. If they are encouraged with lunch and breakfast regiments along with regular training, they will dominate the podiums when it comes to regional and international contests.
