African athletes shine at Youth Games

             African Junior champion Josephine Omaka ignited Nigeria’s gold rush at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in athletics at the Bishan Stadium in the Singapore City-State on Saturday (21 August).

Following in the path of her more accomplished teammate Florence Nwakwe clocked her personal best of 23.46 seconds to lay her hands on the gold medal in the girl’s 200m final on Sunday (22 August).

The two victories ensured Nigeria are Africa’s top placed team on the medal table as at Sunday (22 August). Eritreans had a memorable Sunday bagging a gold silver and bronze medal. To see them occupy joint second spot with South Africa. Kenya and Morocco have a bronze medal each.

Eritrea and Ethiopia shared the spoils in the distance events on Sunday. Abrar Osman offered Eritrea its first taste of glory at the Games lead an African clean sweep of the medals in the boys 3000m. He clocked 8:07.24 and was followed by Fekru Jebesa of Ethiopia (8:08.53) and Moroccan Hicham Sigueni (8:08.55).

In the 1 000m it was Ethiopia’s Mohammed Geleto who carried the day in a personal best of 2:19.54. Eritrea’s Chuchu Jorjo (Eritrea) 2:22.00 was runner up.

It was a memorable day for Eritrea as they bagged a third medal when Samrawit Mengisteab girls 3000. Kenya’s Gladys Chesire won the race in a personal best of 9:33.53.

On the infield, South Africa bagged their first gold medal of these games when Jacques du Plessis won the boys discus in a life time best of 63.94m. Similarly, his teammate Jacob needed a personal best leap of 7.53m (+1.4) to claim the bronze medal in the boys long Jump.

Earlier on Saturday, South Africa Jacques du Plessis clinch a gold medal in the boys discuss with a lifetime best throw of 63.94. On the track, South African Ruan Greyling and Alfas Kishoyan of Kenya bagged silver and bronze medal respectively in the boys 400m (Super Sport)
