As part of their 2002 (E.C.) election campaign, woyane has been intimidating the people of Ethiopia, threatening to arrest and kill if they do not vote for the party.

In several villages, woyane troops have been warning farmers to vote for the ruling party or risk their lives after the election. In the cities, police have been breaking in to private citizen’s homes harassing, intimidating and arresting people. Prominent businessmen and other successful citizens have been targeted and thrown into jail.

The killings of election candidates Mr. Aregawi Ghebreyohannes, a parliamentary candidate for Medrek member party, Arena Tigray and Biyansa Daba, another candidate from the Oromo region was another way of intimidating opposition leaders.

Nevertheless, the ruling party continues to face pressure from opposition troops in several areas of the country. Just within the last 10 days, ONLF conducted several attacks killing 289 woyane soldiers. In Girar area, after killing 30, they proceeded to burn several Woyane tanks and captured countless weapons.
