Second Phase Of Shingrwa Music Talent Competition Concludes

Asmara, 7 March 2010 – The second phase of Shingrwa music talent competition that ran for an entire year in four different stages concluded today with a final competition among three finalists. The event was broadcast live in Eri-TV and Dimsti Hafash.
In a speech she delivered at the opening of the final competition, the guest of honor, Ms. Askalu Menkerios, the Minister of Tourism, stated that music as part and parcel of cultural activities commands a decisive role in nurturing common understanding and building strong national unity as well as developing progressive ways of thinking. She also added that the role and importance of Shingrwa can be viewed from this perspective.
One of the judges, Mr. Yemane Kidane on his part pointed out that Shingrwa program was from the beginning had set out to help aspiring young people identify and properly use their talents, in addition to adding drive to the gradual development of the art of music in the country.
Stating that about 350 contestants have participated in this year’s Shingrwa contest, Mr. Yemane said that 26 participants passed to the second round, 10 to third round and the best three made it to fourth and final phase. He further expressed appreciation to all those who made due contribution for the success of the program in general and the Ministry of Information in particular.
Finally, Minister Askalu Menkerios handed out the prizes to winners-Arafat Hamid 80,000 Nakfa in first place, Abdu Yusuf 50,000 Nakfa in second place and Minas Belay 30,000 Nakfa in third place.
I know Arafa will win but the second should had been Minas Belai. Abdu Yousuf was good but not like Minas Belai. It wasn't fair. Keep on your best Minas.
Wow there is so much to say about this. First of all I would like to conguratulate Arafa Hamid. She deserve it. But then I would like to comment the whole Shingrwa program.
I think that two rounds before Finaöe is too few. I stoped watching Shingrwa when they sent 7 participators home at the same time. That is totaly wrong becouse they shoud have the chance to grow in the program. If there were at least 7 more rounds, all of them would have the chance to get better and bigger while they are in shingrwa. Simply I think it was too short. The judgers said they havnt found the winner they had in mind. How are they gonna find a winner when they dont let the singers develop? One singer cant just develop becouse they tell him what to do. He/she needs time to pratice and 2 rounds is not enough. The first time they sang to public shoudnt be in the finalies, they should have sang more times than that so that they can leave the nervousity behind in the finalies. If you observe you can see how relaxed Arafa Hamid was when she sang the song after she won than while she still was compiting.
My advice to who ever is responsible of Shingrwa is that next time, if they want to find the star they have in their hearts, they should give the participators more time to develop.

ARAFAT has a very STAR quality and she deserves it. Well done !!! MINAS is also a talented singer and has a potential in the future. ABDU Yousuf is already a known good artist, and they shouldn't have allowed seasoned artists to participate in this shingrwa. I have read a lot of people complaining that Tihayish and Amanuel didn't make it. The two young artists are good in Bahlawe songs, but they didn't do a good job on the Zemenawi Tigrigna session. All in all it was good !!! But please do not allow those who had CDs or are known on TV to participate in Shingrwa. After all Shingrwa should be a launching pad for the undiscovered artists.
i would like to congratulate to arafat hamed who has deserved the first place of shungruwa !! the decision of the three judges was fair enough …. minas tried his best to make some movements while singing. this had been his weakness all the time in shunguruwa; and today he had obviously unhandy and inappropriate choreography

What the heck all the people talking about Abdu Yosef. This is not the time to say that he is not deserve wehre he is now. It passed already. I been commente about him since i saw him in 2 nd stage and ya all was clapping your hands and now yopu talking shit. You are just loser and he won finnally. Period..
Our understanding was that SHINGRWA was created to identify and recognize new / undiscovered talent in Eritrea. So, we can not possibly understand how Adu was allowed to compete in the first place. Worse yet, how did he even make it to the last round? He was basically given Tihaysh and Amanuel's spot. If we really care about nurturing new talent, these two young kids could have used the money!
Coming back to the Final round; how can you say Abdu's performance was better than Minas'? Even the audience can not connect to Abdu the way they did with Minas. Play back the tape and see how people were reacting to Minas' performance.
In the case of Arafa, we agree with the decision. She is really a talented young lady and we have no doubt she will do very well in the future.
Congrats Arafa, Abdu and Minas, but Minas should have been at least 2nd place and Abdu should have never been on the final. As an Eritrean, I am greatful for his contribution in the music industry but some of the younger contestants such as Sewit, should have gotten his slot. All in all, Shingrwa is improving big time and would like to see more improvement….
A Lessen to the Judges. In his introduction, the Judge, Mr. Barnabas Mebrahtu, indicated that they did not find a star on this competition as well as on the previous one. It is very patronizing and it is a total assault to the winners. There is a contradiction on his statement. By awarding the price and yet at the same time denying the recognition, and the achievement of the winners is a contradiction on his judgment. What do they think ( the judges) did them a favour? In our judgment they are stars. However, if you cannot find a star this year and the previous year, we feel it reflects on your lousy teaching method where your vocal training has render most singers unable to use their original and unique voice that makes music, and voice distinguished. In our judgment they all sounded, during the competition, like you, and no wonder why you cannot find a star. All the judges should blame yourselves, and not the singers. Our recommendation is you should emphasis on the individual voices of the singers rather than make them sound all the same. In our Tigrigna and other ethnic music tradition, you cannot make it sound like Opera. Embrace them when they are different, distinct, and unique. This is how you discover stars. In conclusion, we hope, your statement is only lapsus linguae, and you should apologize to the starts because you have belittled their achievement. Whoever wins during that particular competition is a winner, no matter what. Perhaps, in your next competition, you may find, someone with angelic and exquisite voice, however, for this year you cannot deny their achievement. They are exemplar singers. Thank you.

If public opinions did matter to judges, then Amanuel and Tihaysh would have been in the Top three.
The other thing is that if shingrwa judges were indeed in the search of the STAR, then obviously whoever wins the 1st place would be considered the STAR.

Shingrwa is FAKE. Two thumbs DOWN! 1-Minas, 2-Arafat, 3-Abdu was the expected fair decision. I think Barnie said "eti kokeb ayterekben" to make more people including the seasoned artists to participate so he & his team can make money. My guess is, next year, there will be no more than 100 participants.

WOW WHAT A WONDERFUL ENDING!!! I watched the entire second season on the internet (BIG thanks to Eastafro) and i have to say that the natural talent that god blessed ARAFA with is sooo authentic and so beautiful. She was my first choice from the start and although minas is talented as well she is the true eritrean treasure. I believe they cheated her when they announced that they did not find their KOKOB this year. SHe is a star!!!!! Who else could you have found if not a star like arafa. Just hope that she gets good direction when collabrating with others to release her music to the world. GREAT JOB ARAFA!!!! Look forward to hear what you will create with that beautiful god given natural gift of yours.

First of all Congra Arafa, second I see exactlly what the judges saw because lets be honest, there were no star this year again. I thought Minas all the way until the last song will be the star of shingrwa this year but it was disappointed me and I can see the judges face they were disappointed too. He is capable of singing much better than he song today. I belive Minas took a risk of song choice but he still should be awarded for second place.
I was shack Minas Belay was the first how he dance everything he was act Arafa was a good artist but her dance was fack Abdu. you took Emanueal and Tihash spot they was a good caples. please shngrwa adminstation don,t let give a chance the singres. or give a chance for all the singers together not with the new people. when do we get a star in 2020. the person got the first place tell a star. or Barnabas Yuel and yemane get a chance to sing one of you will be star. any way Minas was the first Arafa was a second I do not care about abdu.
Many ppl give their commnets based on the decision taken by the organizing committee… some of them happy and some of them not…..but that's what a competition should be, coz if it's not so it wll not so called as competition…..

No matter what is said, it is always known that there wasn't anyone like Arafa. She was just overall an amazing person. Inside and out, she has proven that she is a wonderful and polite person who is just extremely blessed and talented. She shows that NO ONE can take that away from her. Minas is an arrogant person. He thinks he is already a star and also I don't like the way he act when he dance, start and finish the show. Don't forget it is my personal opinion. Abdu he is nice person, but he don't improve he sung for more than 10 years.

If there were at least 7 more rounds, all of them would have the chance to get better and bigger while they are in shingrwa. Simply I think it was too short. The judgers said they havnt found the winner they had in mind. How are they gonna find a winner when they dont let the singers develop? One singer cant just develop becouse they tell him what to do. He/she needs time to pratice and 2 rounds is not enough. The first time they sang to public shoudnt be in the finalies, they should have sang more times than that so that they can leave the nervousity behind in the finalies. If you observe you can see how relaxed Arafa Hamid was when she sang the song after she won than while she still was compiting.
My advice to who ever is responsible of Shingrwa is that next time, if they want to find the star they have in their hearts, they should give the participators more time to develop.

ARAFAT has a very STAR quality and she deserves it. Well done !!! MINAS is also a talented singer and has a potential in the future. ABDU Yousuf is already a known good artist, and they shouldn't have allowed seasoned artists to participate in this shingrwa. I have read a lot of people complaining that Tihayish and Amanuel didn't make it. The two young artists are good in Bahlawe songs, but they didn't do a good job on the Zemenawi Tigrigna session. All in all it was good !!! But please do not allow those who had CDs or are known on TV to participate in Shingrwa. After all Shingrwa should be a launching pad for the undiscovered artists.

Our understanding was that SHINGRWA was created to identify and recognize new / undiscovered talent in Eritrea. So, we can not possibly understand how Adu was allowed to compete in the first place. Worse yet, how did he even make it to the last round? He was basically given Tihaysh and Amanuel's spot. If we really care about nurturing new talent, these two young kids could have used the money!
Coming back to the Final round; how can you say Abdu's performance was better than Minas'? Even the audience can not connect to Abdu the way they did with Minas. Play back the tape and see how people were reacting to Minas' performance.
In the case of Arafa, we agree with the decision. She is really a talented young lady and we have no doubt she will do very well in the future.
Congrats Arafa, Abdu and Minas, but Minas should have been at least 2nd place and Abdu should have never been on the final. As an Eritrean, I am greatful for his contribution in the music industry but some of the younger contestants such as Sewit, should have gotten his slot. All in all, Shingrwa is improving big time and would like to see more improvement….

A Lessen to the Judges.
In his introduction, the Judge, Mr. Barnabas Mebrahtu, indicated that they did not find a star on this competition as well as on the previous one. It is very patronizing and it is a total assault to the winners. There is a contradiction on his statement. By awarding the price and yet at the same time denying the recognition, and the achievement of the winners is a contradiction on his judgment. What do they think ( the judges) did them a favour?
In our judgment they are stars. However, if you cannot find a star this year and the previous year, we feel it reflects on your lousy teaching method where your vocal training has render most singers unable to use their original and unique voice that makes music, and voice distinguished. In our judgment they all sounded, during the competition, like you, and no wonder why you cannot find a star. All the judges should blame yourselves, and not the singers.
Our recommendation is you should emphasis on the individual voices of the singers rather than make them sound all the same. In our Tigrigna and other ethnic music tradition, you cannot make it sound like Opera. Embrace them when they are different, distinct, and unique. This is how you discover stars.
In conclusion, we hope, your statement is only lapsus linguae, and you should apologize to the starts because you have belittled their achievement. Whoever wins during that particular competition is a winner, no matter what. Perhaps, in your next competition, you may find, someone with angelic and exquisite voice, however, for this year you cannot deny their achievement. They are exemplar singers.

Shingrwa is FAKE. Two thumbs DOWN! 1-Minas, 2-Arafat, 3-Abdu was the expected fair decision. I think Barnie said "eti kokeb ayterekben" to make more people including the seasoned artists to participate so he & his team can make money. My guess is, next year, there will be no more than 100 participants.

I watched the entire second season on the internet (BIG thanks to Eastafro) and i have to say that the natural talent that god blessed ARAFA with is sooo authentic and so beautiful. She was my first choice from the start and although minas is talented as well she is the true eritrean treasure. I believe they cheated her when they announced that they did not find their KOKOB this year. SHe is a star!!!!! Who else could you have found if not a star like arafa. Just hope that she gets good direction when collabrating with others to release her music to the world. GREAT JOB ARAFA!!!! First of all Congra Arafa, second I see exactlly what the judges saw because lets be honest, there were no star this year again. I thought Minas all the way until the last song will be the star of shingrwa this year but it was disappointed me and I can see the judges face they were disappointed too. He is capable of singing much better than he song today. I belive Minas took a risk of song choice but he still should be awarded for second place.
