Christmas "Leddet" in Eritrea

Christmas in Eritrea is one of the festivals of the country which is celebrated with great pomp and joy. Christmas in Eritrea is celebrated on two days. The first is celebrated on 25th December, while the second which is called Leddet or Geez Christmas, is celebrated on 7th January. On these two days, the inhabitants are in a merry mood.

The people in Eritrea celebrate Christmas on 25th December along with the rest of the world. However, some of the orthodox Eritrean Christians celebrate the same on 7th January like the followers of the Russian Orthodox Church, who follow the Julian calendar.

The youngsters celebrate 25th December as Christmas. Christmas in Eritrea involves partying, exchange of gifts, cards as well as celebration with family and friends. However, the traditional celebration takes place on 7th January.

Prior to Christmas, people go for shopping for clothes, gifts and a whole lot of decorations to bring sparkle and light to their homes. Besides this, they also purchase a sheep or a goat, which is slaughtered as a mark of sacrifice.

The best part about Christmas in Eritrea is that the families get together and have a sumptuous lunch. After lunch, families sit around and enjoy a warm cup of coffee. Coffee is savored along with popcorn and Panettone, which is a home baked leavened bread. It is a time when families laugh and enjoy these memorable moments together.

Most families watch television during Christmas. There are special programs broadcast on the television channels of Eritrea on this holiday. Besides this, there are numerous clubs, especially at Asmara which are open and late night parties continue at these places. At every street corner you will find posters advertising famous artists, who perform that day.

Besides the merry-making, fun and frolic, Christmas in Eritrea is celebrated by attending midnight mass of the eve of the festival. Crowds flock to the churches during this time to enjoy the Christmas carols which are sung by the choirs.
