Celebrations Marking 30th Anniversary Of NUEW Conclude

Sawa, 2 December 2009 – The celebrations conducted in the Sawa Education and Training Center marking the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the NUEW concluded yesterday following the holding of a conference on issues related to the question of women and various activities.

Study papers presented in the course of the 4-day event highlighted that the organizational capacity of women both inside the country and abroad continues to gain strength as the People’s Front was well aware of the fact that the liberation struggle would not succeed without women’s active participation. Such a phenomenon indeed played major role in nurturing dynamic Eritrean women equipped with the necessary knowledge and free of any discrimination, the papers elaborated. 

Taking note of the moral and physical damage entail on females as a result of underage marriage, the EPLF since the days of the armed struggle has been combating this backward practice, and that major achievements have been registered in this regard thanks to the vigorous efforts.   

Also in a paper focusing on the significance of the national service program vis-à-vis the question of women, it was indicated that the women’s issue has been incorporated in the programs and principles of the Service. Beyond the advantage of acquiring military skill, it has paramount role to play as regards national development and reconstruction endeavors, as well as safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and reinforcing national  unity, the paper emphasized. In this respect, it highlighted the encouraging accomplishments scored in enabling women secure vocational training with a view to improving their standard of living. 

Likewise, in closing remarks, the Chairperson of the NUEW, Ms. Leul Gebreab, said that the holding of the celebrations in Sawa Education and Training Center fully attests to the task being undertaken to bequeath the nation’s cherished values to young females. She also called on government institutions, the PFDJ and the genera public to exert strenuous efforts towards nurturing women agents of change.

About 1,000 people took part in the celebrations that was conducted from November 29 to December 1.
