It has been 30 years now since the establishment of the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW). The Central Region branch of the Union celebrated the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Union from 12th – 14th October 2009 marking the role of women in pre-independence and post-independence periods.
An exhibition that portrays the role of women in the struggle for independence, safeguarding the nation and nation building stayed open from12th – 14th October 2009 at the Bahti Meskerem square. Ministries- (Health, Agriculture, Defense, Labor and Human Welfare), Construction Companies – (Asbeco, Segen, Roddab, Bdho), Sembel Wood and Metal works, Techno-Break, Sabur Printing Press, Eri-soc, a number of art works by female artists and other government and private institutions also took part in the exhibition.
On 13th November, a procession was held from the Shida area to Bahti Meskerem Square by 13 administrative areas, various ministries, construction companies, government institutions and private institutions. The procession was opened by Ms. Leul Gebreab, Chairwoman of the National Union of Eritrean Women.
Upon arrival on the Bahti Meskerem Square, Mr. Tewolde Kelati, Administrator of Central Region in his speech said that in Eritrea, the question of women’s equality is an issue of identity, security and existence. “A lot has to be done in order to achieve more,” he added.
Similarly Ms. Tekea Tesfamichael, Head of The NUEW Central Region branch, said that without their role in the national independence and liberation it self, Eritrean women could have not been able to achieve the equality and justice they are enjoying today. “They are still continuing their part in the nation building,” she noted.
On behalf of the Association for Cooperation and Initiative for the Development in the Horn of Africa sub-region (EASSI), a message of solidarity was conveyed praising the struggle and efforts of Eritrean women in combating harmful practices.
National level celebration of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the National Union of Eritrean Women will be held in Sawa from 29th October to 1st December 2009.
