Commet on the terrific Movie “Maere”
First of all I would like to appreciate East Afro Website for their time to edit and post it for the audience who have no access to Erie TV and hope you keep it up.
I have seen most of the big Eritrean movies both online and in DVDs. I found this more spectacular and educational. It gave me good insight of paradigm shift in Eritrean culture. Public awareness for Corruption, HIV disease, women empowerment and respect of human value that material value.
It is acceptable to exaggerate some of the incidents in the movie as far as Drama is concerned. Mekonnen was extremely corrupted and there no question that he deserved it that way. What I wondered was why would he go that far for the higher administration to find out he was going the wrong direction. I doubt if auditing is the only way to find corrupted people. I saw lack transparency in the working atmosphere. Had Mekonen been found guilty early, his family wouldn’t have been left in jeopardy. Regarding his wife, Tirhas was innocent but she should have been keen to know how he makes the money. I am sorry for her. I swear to God I almost cried for her.
Tedros, wasn’t likable man by the author for sure and he was the important figure to not to mention Hana. He threw him like nothing and brought him to life surprisingly. I appreciate that the author didn’t give Teddy the chance to explain his innocence. BUT WHY would he loose his dignity being insulted by Saba’s family? AFTER all, I saw no balance on how Beauro Administrator could have an issue of a living place. I am sure the author hasn’t researched that much to find other reason to mess Teddy’s life. Of course our sisters (like Saba) don’t like to live like the way they should live and with the income they have. Here she was became the victim. I love his kids probably the author has good respect for honest family.
Hana was fantastic, she is always fantastic. Very rational, not intimidated by people’s opinion. She gave a good lesson to our sisters not to worry about others feelings. Women can pick their choice and the author tries to break the silence. Good point.
The other good point was its educational message about HIV. By the way, I don’t remember seeing Eritrean movies sending message like this in depth (I have seen couple of them but that has never been core subject for them.)
Remember Azamit, Teame and Maere they focus on the worst consequences of money and disrespect of value of human being. I am not sure if the Eritrean people or culture has such an influence of judging people for their material value. For me I doubt it. Even though I understand that monetary issues can make the author’s life easy to convey his message, I would think of different direction.

    Composition wise,
Great Job, nice places in Asmara all cultural, natural place. Almost the whole city and country was promoted in this movie.
    Keep up your good work,
I hope to see you ( the author) in a different masterpiece.
    Ermias, TEXAS

  11. Saba says:

Maere was educational movie. I am so greateful for the writers, actors, and producerswho were able to depict the current situation in eritrea through the film. Corruption is like a termite that can destroy any country’s devolepment. let’s educate our people that honesty and hard work pays off in end. Maere showed us that we will, eventually, receive the approprate wages for the decisions and actions that we make. thank you, we can’t wait for the next movie.

  13. Yodit says:

this was a very good movie i thought that who ever made the movie did a grate job.
umm i think should bring more movies like this, because it gets people watching.i thought the acters were grate but i thought the mother of Saba was the best she really acted like an Eritrean mother well everything she said sounded like what my grandma would say.

  14. Ruta(California) says:

i was amazed about the whole movie and i think this is the best movie i watch since now, keep up with those kind of movie becuase it remindes me of back home and i learn alot from it. love yall.

  15. hana says:

Maere was an entertaining and addictive drama. This was the first time I got drawn into eritrean drama to this depth. Maere was more interesting and provoctive in the beginning than the end. The lay out was very promising in a way of ‘Nasar’ being this businessman that could weld such power and so on and seeing him near death’s door by one failed business transaction was too much a stretch; seeing him carted out like a mummy is a bit too exaggerated. The shift in the drama for me was, when Mekonnen’s blatant disregard for work kept going on & on; when Tedros’ marriage woes seemed one sided -he had no voice! It got annoying
Overall aii-VERY WELL DONE! I don’t know who did “san Lisan” , I saw it a long time ago and it stayed w/me.
To the production team–PLEASE make something similar to that; a love story within the context of Eritrean culture.
    Thank you.

  16. hana says:

Oh I forgot. My Hat off to the young actress who plays Tedros’ daughter. She is amazing- very believable!
She moved me to tears. Her pleadings against Tedros’ silence was very powerful.

  17. Ayakulom says:

Maetre is a nice movie, but they have alot of thing to improve for example there is to many coffee shope I mean most of the shoot was in a Bar or enda shahi. But it is a nice story with powerfull messege. And hope people wil learn from it!!!

  20. Hana (Toronto) says:

wow….THIS WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST MOVIES!!! i do hope more Eritrean writers follow Debesai Woldu’s foot steps and write as educational and entertaining as this movie. I am tired of watching mainstream ( afkerka , afkreki, moeytelka, fikirk abeduni blah blah movies).

First of all, i want to thank asmarino5 for posting this movie on EA , your efforts and hard work is very much appreciated as always.

Secondly , i would like to thank the great Debesai Woldu for writing such great movies and continuing to entertain us, i hope he continues to use his great talent to explore the untouched Eritrean culture. The two greatest assets the movie had were the message it conveyed to the public and it’s relatedness to the reality ,and it was worth the watch. It was educational yet entertaining, charming yet sad, but at the end it taught the audiences a great message, that lying, stealing, abusing power, being materialistic and adultery all lead down hill. I especially like the strong message it sent to the younger generation, about HIV.

However, i don’t like the message it sent to younger girls about marriage, Hana shouldn’t have married that guy. At the beginning the author had a great message saying that woman can choose their own mate, but then the author flips his message and makes Hana marry someone she was not sure about. Hana seemed she was forced to marry him and he seemed to disrespect her all the time, accused her of cheating and even wanted to call the wedding off. the author basically said, marriage is something you perform because everyone wants you to, but not necessary because you want to do it. As smart and successful as Hana i don’t think she should be forced to marry that guy.

Last but not least, i thank all the actors for the magnificent acts. i enjoyed this film very much, becoming Debesai Woldu’s great fan. i also listen to some of the raidio drama’s Debesai Woldu has on Dimsti Hafash and i am really falling in love with Debesai Woldu’s work.

So Debesh, how about an action movie next??? just for a thought…..

    God bless you all
    God bless Eritrea

It is a lesson for the people who is working on the public working/ serving a cervice the the Eritrean people, administrations…..,,,,If we understand the corrupted world I am sure we will be better soon,,,,, practice makes perfected so we are coming to get more understanding about that.

  35. Johannes Kechemele@hotmail.com says:

I found MaEre very exiting. I think/hope it will be a wake up call for all the civilian and governmentaly companies and their work structures. Cus this movie reflexs what really is going on in real life in Eritrea and Eritrean inviroment. Its becouse of scoundrel “bad guys” like the “mekonen roll in the movie” the government is being forced to keep everything so tight in Eritrea. If everybody worked and understood things like ” Tedros and John rolls in the movie” so the government wouldnt keep companies etc all to their selves. Thats why i think that this movie is so educationfull for the people in Eritrea and even in foreign countries. The most important message is that PEOPLE ARE GOVERNMENT!

  38. ellen says:

First I would like to thank the generous service they providing us …thank you Easafro.com!

Second, since this movie was supposedly for educational purpose, we must criticize it seriously, right?

OK, at the beginning of the movie storyline was disorganized; there were too many subordinate characters, and it was hard to follow the story. The writes started to focus on the main characters at the middle of the movie, in my opinion, this was little late to introduce the main characters. In additions, most part of the movie it seems that the message was corruptions is good, because they were showing most part of the movie that the corrupted people having a good life, while the good guy Tedros was struggling with his families and financially. They drugged the storyline too long.

The ending of the movie was very disappointing, because they didn’t show that there is a law in Eritrea against corruption, but what they tried to tell the audience was if you are corrupted person, you will be punished by God, not by the government. Another thing was that Mokene pretend to be crazy, what was that all about? Are they trying to tell the public if you did something wrong, just pretend to be crazy and you will avoid jail time, right? This is irresponsible and wrong message!

I didn’t understand why Nasr and Mekonen didn’t get arrested? Are they saying that the government doesn’t arrest corrupted people? Also, why Tirhas (Mokenen’s wife) was in his bedside, why she didn’t throw the dog to the curve? Are they trying to tell us Eritrean women MUST stand beside their men no matter what? This kind of message is very dangerous to the young girls. Instead showing us strong women, they chose to show us a bunch of pessimistic women. Anyway, I don’t know, I am confused about this movie.

The way the movie ended, I give it 6/10! I was hoping to see the corrupted people busted and humiliated in front of their families and friends. Hey, at least it was an entertainment, right?

  39. major says:

It shows how corrtion destroy eritrea. I recently read hads eritrea (ziban hager). I leave in canada and I am orginally from dekamahre. What happen in dekamahre is very bad. corruption is deeply rooted in eritrean society it will be hard to get rid of it, on the contrary eritrea will only belong to the few who have power andd money. Al the people who lost the their life for independence is for nothig. It sad story.

First, I am going to miss the movie every Sunday, but mostly the song at the begining of the movie. Anyway this is by far one of the best Eritrean movie that I have seen in a very long time. It’s cast did an A+ job in delivering the message to the audience. They were profesional yet emotional to make the audience be part of the experience. I was so happy when Tedros got vandicated at the end. I was kind of emotional at the same time empowered by the power of Truth. Honesty is deeply rooted in the Eritrean culture and I am proud to be an Eritrean. Oh, EastAfro & Asmarino05, keep it up!!

today I can really say that ‘Maere’ is one of the movies that I appreciate for its contents and the way that teachs the people, besides the film have a value of breaking the news that contaminating the grace of eritrean people and its government.
Maere is fantastic movie, based on true story, and, I wouldn’t expect to be written by eritrean writers but it happens to be true, and I am really happy for the outhors and directors and the editors plus all the actors that make up the film.

It was a very very very educational movie. I cried at the end and the end was wonderful. I like how Tedros forgive his wife because in life we have to forgive each other because we all can make a mistake at one point. I’m so happy for Tedros that he got a better position in his job and back with all his family happly he desrve it because he was very akal and mestewali and bruk seb. I’m also glad for Hana that she got married to the boy because it was time for her to get married and her dad would be happy. I have a lot to say about this movie, but to just make it sure it was very wonderful and thoughtful and good ending. I will mis MAERE so much though. I hope a very great movie comes soon.

I have lerned a lot from this movie, it shows two sides to every human being. People respect you when you are successful but if they see that you are not doing well they look down to you. Every human being is the same with success or without coz we don’t know wot is round the corner. Maere is one of the best
movie i have seen so far. It makes me feel so proud to be eritrean and well done to those who were involved doing the movie.

Asmarino5, thanks a lot for postin this movie. keep up the good work!
and to the author, debessai weldu, u did a good job too….but in my opinion u r always not good in finishing a movie.some characters get lot at the end like tirhas’s parents for e.g and u just cut the movie short at the end.i hope u’ll improve that thing coz u r one of the greatest author’s in out country these days and we count on u in developing eri-movie production.

and this one is for “tteazabit” …ur comment is funny and immature, so when if we interpret what u meant is that Nassir should have had a christian name coz theft and corruption is only for christians not for moslems, right? my advise to u.,…try to change ur stone age mind ……wake up …and start watchin some hollywood movies so that u’ll learn the meaning of a movie for starters, since am sure u don’t know nothin abt it according to ur foolish comment,

Bar non best Eritrean movie ever made !! Two Thumbs way up!! I’m the biggest follower of Eritrean Movie’s to be where we are in a short period of time that is really spendid ! I know we have a lot to go ,but this is a great star. Debesay you raised the bar high so we expect the next ErTV movies to be as great as yours. I would like to say thank you to all the casts, director, camera man, editor, Author, EriTv (minsitry of Information), PFDJ cultural affairs and Zoba Debubawi Keih Bahri for sponsoring the movie at last but not least to Eastafro. This is a good lesson to everyone ,but especially to those serving the people watch out the people and Goverment of Eritrea can’t tolerate corruption because we paid a lot of sacrfies to get our independence and we don’t want to see our country like the rest of sub saharan African country.

First of all, i would like to thank eastafro.com for their unlimited effort to keep us in touch with our country, our people, our culture and our identity. You are doing great job to keep us updated and feel at home. It has partly cured my “home sickness”.

Ma’Ere is one of the greatest movies broadcasted in EriTV. It has revealed real situations and created awarness within the society. It has touched many parts of real life, governance, administration, family issues, unneccessary interference, commitment and determination and much more…..and has tought us a lot in life.

Debesay woldu is by far one of the best film authors in Eritrea. He has amazing power of penetrating real situations, especially family matters, and I would like to witness his contribution to building a healthy and civilized society in Eritrea.

Eastafro, keep us updated, post us anything related to our country, which is positive, contructive and the way forward, keep the good work and i hope to see EriTv online in the near future in your website.

    Thanks.

Maere movie conveys, among others, two important messages. 1. Corruption and its negative impact on society in general and the person who is perpetuating it in particular. Africa is the continent blessed with natural resources, yet still suffers from poverty primarily because of corruption and lack of transparency and accountability. 2. Maere’s second message and as important is to make the public aware of the negative consequences of making a major decision in life based on hearsay, without presenting any evidence as we saw what happened to Tedros and his family. The family was almost broken to a point of no repair because of some unsubstantiated allegation.
All in all the movie was great in that it brought to light some of the factors that keep a country from moving forward and their indirect impact on family affairs, which was devastating in this case.

This movie is well-written, well-directed and well-played. I have nothing, but praise for this movie. I was entertained, informed and educated through each episode.

A very common flaw in most Eritrean movies in general and EriTv programs in particular is not keeping the Tigrigna language up to the standard. Using Amharic words and phrases (when we could say it in Tigrigna) is just one example. In this regard, this movie has very few errors.

    Keep up the good work.

WAHT A MOVIE …. THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST ERITREAN MOVIE. I LOVE IT AND WOULD LIKE TO THANK ERI TV, PRODUCER, ACTOR/ACTRESS AND DIRECTOR. WELL JOBE DONE!

IT REALLY REFLECTES OUR DAILY LIFE AND HOPE WE ALL LEARN FROM THIS MOVIE.
SINCE OUR PROBLEM IS WELL KNOWN AND IT IS PRECENT DANGER THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD TAKE SOME STEP.

    THANX

  99. mi says:

    I prefered ITEN MEHAZUT!
Because I think the movie was a little bit out of reality! First because the honest man was too much! Never angry, never trying to defend himself especially with his wife when she accused him of cheating her! Never told her he loved her! Never took her out except when their relation was allready compromised, never give her any gifts within his possibility! He seems to enjoy more the presence of the girl-friend rather than that of his wife! And his wife returned to him only when he got job promotion! I didn’t like the couple!
The other man used to give his wife a lot of attention but he was also surrounded by a lot of young women because he was powerfull and handsome! He fell into the temptation! Then he was good in business dealing, he was flexible but he broke the law! He tried to escape but destiny make him fell into mental insanity!
I think they exaggerate in showing so bad condition of the mental home! I think it is a shame!
I think everybody can learn that we have to do right not because someone will punish us but because God is seen!
    Thank you!
    Happy Easter to all!

i really like the movie. it was the greatest movie ever.
but at the end i didnt expect it like that. because, even thou tedros was the greatest guy he should say sorry to saba. at the first his relation with hana had to be known by saba. Maried guy can go any where with out known his wife. His wife had to know every thing his activities.
    thank you very much.
    see u with next movie.
    hopefully.

    I

First of all i would like to congraglate the auther Debesay Weldu for the astonishing powerful & eductional move.Thumbs up! !
over all I have comment abt the women Terahs &Saba the auther make them very week women cuz both of them have isomething in common ,Terahs she doesnt even try to ask where the money come from which is make her just a sex object & blind & saba she is very emotinal she thinks only the materal thing she accused her hasband with out any proof she can’t express herself or communcate the role they play it doesn’t empower women, this a new generation women have to know how to communcate & express them selfs they don’t have to be emotinal & delcate ,Tedros was very responsibel hard work men but he doesn’t show her any love or feeling for his wife & he should introduce hanna with his wife , sometimes even though u know u are innocent u have to try hard to make them belive u, if they think u made a mistake ,but i will say Tedros he try but not hard enough. The ending it was not what I expected cuz Mokenen has to be chareged of corraption not to ended up in mental health hosptal.

Tnx eastafro for posting this great move

I was really in it, and I am going to miss it, because whenever sunday comes the day is longer than the other days of the week, this is because I am waiting for maere movie. I watch it in eastafro.com, so that I have to wait until 10:00 that is why for me the longer day of the week is sunday.
today I can really say that ‘Maere’ is one of the movies that I appreciate for its contents and the way that teachs the people, besides the film have a value of breaking the news that contaminating the grace of eritrean people and its government.
Maere is fantastic movie, based on true story, and, I wouldn’t expect to be written by eritrean writers but it happens to be true, and I am really happy for the outhors and directors and the editors plus all the actors that make up the film.
It is a very nice film and I would like to say Congradulations to all of the members of those who sacrifices their time to act on the movie ‘maere’.

  112. The Real ZEYMAWI CREW says:

Some body has commented here using our group name ZEYMAWI. First of all his/her comment is not backed up by our group.

I started to watch Eritrea movies back in 1999 in Asmera in Cinema Roma. At that time the quality was not so good, understandably. They had good stories but they didn’t have good quality equipment to film, and they couldn’t get sponsors easily for they movies also. I guess the sponsors didn’t see profit coming from movies as now.

10 years has passed away and the story is now completely changed. Eritrean movie making has been improved tremendously thanks to the dedication of all the actors, actresses, producers, artists, camera men/women, sound engineers, editors, directors, writers and not to forget the sponsors (just to mention a few;-).
Not only the quality, but also the numbers has been increasing. That is of course good for us. It would mean more competition, and if there is competition there is improvement all the way. The result of this has been the coming out of great movies like: BIET MINARISH, ETA ADE, MAERE, GIDAI KUNATIN FITIHIN, NIESHTEY HAWEY KINDI HAMUTEY, ETEN MEHAZUT, SHIKORINATAT and I could keep mentioning a lot more.

We thank all the people, who in one way or the other, contributed to start, and still contributing to bring Eritrean movies to the next level.

And I don’t want to go without thanking EastAfro for his/her contribution here. I know you are investing your precious time to entertain your people, and I want to THANK YOU again.

We will keep posted on EastAfro.COM hoping to find a new Eritrean movie series!

    Take care all!

I take this occasion to thank all the actors and tell them to continue doing what they have done so far, May God bless them
