The Ministry of Health has introduced kidney dialysis at the Orotta National Referral Hospital here in Asmara. The Hospital which was providing patients with ordinary kidney treatment is now able to handle kidney failures through dialysis.
Dr. Habteab Mehari, Director of the Referral Hospitals, said that patients with chronic kidney failure are treated through peritoneal dialysis. He also stated that hemodialysis, another type of dialysis, requires highly skilled health workers and more expensive facilities to be available in third world countries. However, Eritrea has introduced the needed equipment and is planning to train medical staff in order to provide such health service in the future.
The machine for hemodialysis, which requires a daily cleaning, is now available at the hospital. A doctor was sent to Saudi Arabia and two nurses to Italy to specialize on dialysis. At the present, the Hospital performs peritoneal procedure and hemodialysis in some serious cases is given by foreign experts.
The Ministry of Health has agreed to bring dialysis specialists from Italy for two years. Dr. Habteab said that the procedure is expensive and requires more resources; however, its introduction is a big leap in the health sector in Eritrea.
Dialysis is a procedure that is a substitute for many of the normal functions of the kidney, basically filtering waste products from the body and regulating the body’s fluid balance. Dialysis enables individuals with kidney failures, to lead a normal life.
