Simon Bairu wins the 2008 Canadian Cross Country Championships

Facing the best runners in Canada, Simon made history yesterday by winning the 10 kilometer Canadian Cross country championship.

Even though most would imagine he will break away in the last kilometer or two, Simon was ‘fired up’ from the start. He started the move at about 3K mark and was solo from 5K on.

In a snow covered course and temperatures hovering around freezing point, it was thrilling to watch him win by big margin. I watched the video of the championship games knowing that Simon crowned the title once again and it was still exciting.

This will mark a historic win for Simon making him the only Canadian to have the title, Canadian Cross Country Champion, for the sixth time. Simon went to the course yesterday being tied with 5-time winner Paul McCloy who was a champion from 1983 to 1987. Simon did a consecutive win from 2002 until 2006 but did not take part in the 2007 event.

Simon is a proud member of EAAA and his valuable advice is making a different in Eritrean runners in the states. He is currently mentoring high school runners.

The victory has qualified him to go to the World Cross Country Championships  to be held in Aman, Jordan on March 28, 2009 where he will join his countrymen and women from Eritrea headed by Zerisenay.

Congratulations to Simon !
