Dr. Ellie Hamburger is an attending pediatrician at Children’s Pediatric Associates in Washington, DC, and serves as the Director of the Primary Care Residency Track at Children’s National Medical Center as well as Associate Director of the Pediatric Residency Program in Washington. Since its inception, she has been the faculty coordinator of a pediatric post-graduate training program in the country of Eritrea, a collaborative project between George Washington University Medical Center, Physicians for Peace, and the Eritrean Ministry of Health. The George Washington University Medical Center, located in Washington D.C., USA is internationally recognized for clinical training and education expertise and is committed to extending its healthcare education capability to the country of Eritrea.Physicians for Peace based in Norfolk, Virginia, USA is an international, humanitarian, nonprofit organization dedicated to building peace and international friendships in developing countries through medical education.
Eritrean Ministry of Health is firmly devoted to vastly importing its medical education and training capabilities and to hosting the partnership’s efforts.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
In the Fall of 2006, The George Washington University School of Medicine, Physicians for Peace, and the Ministry of Health of Eritrea signed a Memorandum of Agreement to establish post-graduate training programs for physicians in Surgery and Pediatrics. The program was inaugurated in December 2007 and the first class of residents started their training in January 2008.The newly established post-graduate training consists of a two-year pediatric residency and a three-year surgical residency. The goal of these programs is to produce both new faculty members to teach in pediatric and surgery courses for future residents, as well as practicing pediatricians and surgeons to serve the capital and provinces.
Physicians for Peace, The George Washington University School of Medicine and the Ministry of Health of Eritrea are working to build health care capacity in this war-torn country.
