UN to investigate Djibouti, Eritrea political crisis
New York, US – A UN mission is set to visit the border region between Djibouti and Eritrea, to investigate recent violence and also assess the “fractious political climate”.UN associate spokesperson, Yves Sokorobi, told the Pan African News Agency (PANA) Saturday in New York, that “UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was sending a fa c t-finding mission to the Horn of Africa”.
Sokorobi said the UN team will be in the region to investigate military aggressi on by Eritrea against Djibouti in Ras Doumeira and Doumeira Island in June.
He disclosed that the mission will be carried out by the UN Department of Political Affairs (DPA), as part of its conflict-prevention mechanisms.According to him, the tense and volatile border region has been the source of concern that a spark in violence could lead to a further escalation of military actions by Djibouti and Eritrea.
Sokorobi also said the mission will “assess the political, security and humanitarian situation along the border and prepare a report for the UN Secretary-General.”
PANA learnt that Eritrea’s June aggression resulted in the death of several people, while dozens of others were wounded.
The UN recently called on Djibouti and Eritrea to refrain from violence and heed to a cease-fire to guarantee peace and security in the Horn of Africa.
